An unsentimental portrait of travelling communities around Ireland

The Irish traveller – their image has become the bat with which they are beaten.

At best, their portrayal is a romanticised vision, bow-topped caravans populated by gruff adults and grubby-faced children.

At worst, their idiosyncrasies are set under the microscope to be ridiculed.

Moving beyond such superficial depictions, Northern Irish photographer Chris Barr, who earned his MA in photography from the University of Ulster, has spent the last ten years photographing travellers throughout Ireland as part of his ongoing series Katabasis.

What results is a gritty but personal evocation of an extremely nuanced community.
