Cannes advertising festival starts with Young Lions winners

The Cannes advertising festival 2010 has started and traditionally one of the first events is the announcement of the winners of the Young Lions. In previous years stockphotography companies Corbis and Getty Imageshave outdone each other with big sponsorship packages, lounges and parties. This year, like 2009, the presence is a lot more modest. Having said that, Getty Images is sticking to one of its original and long term supporting events and sponsors the Young Lions for the 13th year.

The state of the advertising industry is important for picture buyers and sellers alike and I’ll report on the event throughout this week. While Fast Media Magazine did get a press accreditation, due to work obligations and extortionate flight prices I will not attend the event and will report with the information that is made available instead.

And if you’re in Cannes and have material you want to share do send it over. For now we’re kicking off with the Young Lions:

PRESS RELEASE

PERU WINS YOUNG LIONS COMPETITION AT CANNES LIONS ADVERTISING FESTIVAL

Peru has won the prestigious Young Lions Print Competition for hot creative talent at the 57th Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

The Young Lions Competition is designed to catapult the careers of rising stars that are set to redefine the future use of images in advertising.  The winning team members are Omar Sotomayor (Copywriter) and Gastón Soto Denegri (Art Director) from Circus. This year, the Jury selected Colombia to take second place, with third place awarded to Denmark. Commenting on their win, the ecstatic team from Peru said: “We are so incredibly happy and that the jury appreciated our idea.”

This year’s brief, disclosed to competitors on 19th June, was set by Plan.  The charity disclosed a brief to drive awareness of their sponsor a child programme, particularly aimed at sponsoring a girl.

42 teams, most of which comprised of an Art Director and Copywriter under 30 years of age, had just 24 hours to interpret the brief and develop a print ad, using imagery sourced from Getty Images’ range of creative, editorial and archival collections.

The work was scrutinised by the Film & Jury members, headed up by this year’s Cannes Lions Jury President, Mark Tutssel, Chief Creative Officer, Leo Burnett Worldwide. Commenting on Peru’s winning work, Tutssel added “It was important that the winning work did not rely on negativity and instead empowers the organisation. The beauty in this idea is in its simplicity, it is clear and concise and creates an immediate bond with the reader and conveys a message of hope and positive change, in a clear and compelling way. It leverages the brand and brings an idea which goes above and beyond a short term solution.”

On Colombia’s Silver winning work, Tutssel comments “This work demonstrated a brilliant use of the media to connect with the target audience and has the ability to unite the charity; if all women’s magazines could unite together behind a powerful cause, it could create real and positive change.”

The Young Lions Competition is being sponsored by Getty Images for the 13th consecutive year, reaffirming its commitment to promoting the best use of imagery in advertising.  Getty Images was the exclusive content provider for the competitions, enabling contestants to draw from its broad range of creative, editorial, multimedia and archival collections.

The Getty Images team were on hand to provide technical support throughout the process and over the past year searched for the best up-and-coming creative talent from around the world. Spotted in a number of their local markets, the young hotshots went on to compete in regional heats before the all important final in Cannes.

Andy Saunders, Vice President of Imagery at Getty Images, commented: “We get excited every year when the Young Lions competition comes around. We know that all the teams, who represent some of the hottest creative talent in their respective countries, are going to be involved in setting the creative agenda in years to come – and it is always an inspiration to see how they use Getty Images’ content. This year has been no exception and I would like to congratulate all those who participated in the Young Lions Competition.”
