Cepic Congress Kick Off, Latest Changes And Full Program

With many people already in Istanbul and the rest of us flying in over the coming days the Cepic congress is kicking off wednesday the 17th with the registration and opening reception. See below for the latest additions and some minor changes to the program for the new media day. We are happy to have added Shahidul Alam in the afternoon and new panelists for the panel entitled ‘Lower prices, reduced margins, more sales! which I will be moderating. We are starting our client session 15 minutes early because we felt the quality and quantity of panellists deserved a bit more time, this now starts at 11.00.  As a result the morning break will not be taking place. New Busines Models For The Digital Media Economy

Keynote: David Campbell


With both academic and practice-based credentials in photography, multimedia and politics, Campbell brings an understanding of the contexts that shape visual storytelling to the analysis and production of new photographic work. His work builds on an extensive record of research, writing and production. In recent years he curated three large visual projects – ‘Atrocity, Memory, Photography‘ on the Bosnian War; ‘Imaging Famine‘, and ‘The Visual Economy of HIV-AIDS‘ – and gave the 2005 Sem Presser Lecture to the World Press Photo awards. In addition to the blog and Twitter feed, his most recent contribution to debates about contemporary multimedia journalism appeared in the publication of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University (‘Photojournalism in the New Media Economy‘, Nieman Reports, Spring 2010), which was based on a five-part blog series on ‘The Revolutions in the Media Economy‘.

Lewis Blackwell has worked as a leading author, editor and creative director in photography, winning international recognition with talks, exhibitions and books. He was for many years the overall creative head of Getty Images, the world’s largest photography agency, and prior to that was the editor-in-chief and publisher of Creative Review magazine. He lives in London and is currently director of strategy at Image Source.

Panelists

Martin Casson is an Art Director, Designer, and Creative Director at Dentsu London, overseeing Canon. He has worked at some of the UK’s largest advertising agencies such as M&C Saatchi and AMV BBDO, as well as some of the smallest. He has won a number of awards at D&AD, Cannes and The One Show. And somewhat unusually for a career creative has spent time client side, working with Christie’s the art and auction specialist as their European Creative Director of Marketing. Throughout this time he has helped nurture his love of photography by both commissioning and collaborating with some of the best photographers in the business.

Alexander Karst, 43, started his career in 1998 as Web & PR Manager for PhotoDisc, becoming Web & PR Manager for Getty Images in 2000. While he opened the German office for Digital Vision together with other former Getty Managers, they worked on the idea of building a service office for the picture buying industry – mainly for the advertising sector. First at Strandperle, and since 2008 at Die Bildbeschaffer GmbH, he established an Artbuying, fulfillment and consulting agency, together with his longtime colleague Michaela Koch.

Marco Oonk is Director of  Fast Media Team Ltd, the company publishes Fast Media Magazine, the picture business guide. He has worked in the stockphotography industry for 15 years including Getty Images and Corbis. Marco is also a Director at Picturemedia Ltd. Picturemedia powers picture sales. Stockphotography companies save money by outsourcing their sales and marketing activities to us instead of running an office with employees. Currently the company serves a number of clients in the industry.

Benoit Claire: Born into the Internet era, he started his career following his IT studies by founding a web hosting company which later sold to Amen, a European web hosting leader and he joined as Marketing Product Manager. Gaining more experience within the social media universe with Bahu -a social network targeting teenagers- he spearheaded Europe’s marketing development reaching 2 million members after only 2 years. Highly skilled in both business and engineering, he joined Fotolia in 2009 as Marketing Director overseeing global business development as well as new market development and launching untapped campaigns ensuring Fotolia’s leading position as the largest picture marketplace with 13 million images and over 2,5 million users.

Dittmar Frohman: Frohmann is the Managing Director of iStockphoto Europe. He brought an unexpected and creative background to the company. Before working for iStock he was the Regional Director for Fotolia in G-S-A. Born in West Berlin, he garnered two degrees from British universities in marketing and business. Music is a passion that led him to market the German heavy metal label “Noise Records,” the New York City-based dance label “Strictly Rhythm”, as well as London’s “React Records”. He then founded his own successful music label, “blaou.”. In addition to this he has also run galleries, represented artists, translated books and TV shows and published mobile content for Vodafone. Dittmar is an indeep connaisseur of the international Microstock scene and a global marketing specialist with a proven track history in localization.

Michael Connors: Connors is a multi-media artist in NYC. He  conceived the web’s morguefile, one of the largest free image websites as a college student in 1996. It is currently a collaborative effort between brothers Kevin and Michael Connors as also Johannes Seemann. The morguefile contains photographs freely contributed by many artists to be used in creative projects by visitors to the site.

Scott Mc Fiernan is a media industry leader. Mc Kiernan’s dynamic leadership of the ZUMA Press family of companies, as well as decades of wide-ranging experience in photojournalism have proven to be instrumental in establishing one of the largest editorial photo agencies in the world and the first digital age picture agency: ZUMA Wire. Mc Kiernan as a Web pioneer in ‘92, launched the net’s first database for editorial pictures. Today his agency is the agent to some of the world’s most respected photojournalists (3,000+), newspapers (100+), agencies (66+) and wire services (9) and always evolving.

Shanon Fagan is a strategic advisor to international image collections seeking neutral knowledge of China’s growing photographic and interactive media sectors for intellectual property rights, licensing controls, market development, supply-side base, buyer-side requirements, as well as governmental control issues as they relate to technology, financial, legal, and corporate operational structures unique to China. He was also the chair of the ASMP, the American Society of Media Photographers and on the advisory board of the YPA (Young Photographers Alliance).

Sandeep Maheswari: After writing a book on marketing and creating a World Record in photography, Sandeep Maheshwari founded ImagesBazaar.com in 2006. Sandeep’s passion lies in creating an incredible image of India. He says, “We will take India to the world. In near future, we will be behind every possible visual communication about India or Indians anywhere on this planet. In other words, the World will see India through our eyes.” In 2009, Sandeep Maheshwari was adjudged as one of the most promising entrepreneurs of India by the “Business World” magazine. In 2010, he won the “Star Youth Achiever Award” instituted by the Global Youth Marketing Forum. And recently, he bagged the coveted “Young Creative Entrepreneur” Award by the British Council, a division of the British High Commission.

Daphne Fu is the Director of Operations at Panorama Images in China, where she is responsible for all aspects of service management, project management, service delivery and product plans, including forecasting and scheduling, production processes, quality, supplier relations and compliance. She has set up and reviewed strategies for the company based on performance and feedback from clients and suppliers. Fu is also responsible for new business opportunities world wide.

Steve Jung is the executive Director at Getty Images Korea for Multibits Korea where he has been for 8 years. He is responsible for marketing, strategic planning, channel management, content, partnerships and new business development. Before this he was a marketing consultant at EMC Partners consulting and worked at Kodak as a marketing team manager. He graduated at Chungnam National University with a masters in Marketing and business administration.

Opportunities for the picture business

Shahidul Alam is a Bangladeshi photographer, writer and activist with a special interest in education, new media and ICT. I was a research tutor at London University where I obtained a PhD in organic chemistry before taking up photography as a profession. I am a former president of the Bangladesh Photographic Society and set up the award winning Drik Picture Library. I also set up the Bangladesh Photographic Institute and Pathshala, the South Asian Institute of Photography and the DrikNews photo agency. I am the director of Chobi Mela the festival of photography in Asia. My work has been shown in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts, the Royal Albert Hall in London, Le centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the National Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur. I have chaired the World Press Photo international jury. I am an honorary fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, a board member of the National Geographic Society and the Eugene Smith Foundation. I am currently visiting professor of photography at the University of Sunderland. In 2007 I lectured at Harvard, UCLA and Stanford universities in the USA, Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines and Universidade Eduaro Monldane in Mozambique and was one of the Masters in the Joop Swart Masterclassorganised by World Press Photo. In 2007, I also had two books published, “Nature’s Fury” on the earthquake in Kashmir and “Portraits of Commitment” a book of portraits of leaders in the fight against HIV/AIDS in South Asia. I have been a guest curator for the National Art Gallery in Malaysia and the Whitechapel Gallery in London. In 2009 I had the rare privilege of being given exclusive access to photograph Nelson Mandela. In 2010, I presented my ongoing work on extrajudicial killings at the Tate Modern. I am currently setting up a media academy in Bangladesh

Amos Struck is the founder and editor of Stock Photo Press (http://www.stockphotopress.com), a publishing company which operates several German stock photo online magazines, including fotoskaufen.de (buy photos) and fotos-verkaufen.de (sell photos). He is also creator of the Microstock Photo Plugin for WordPress , MicrostockCharts.com and GuteWolke.com – a company introducing stock photo venders to new sales outlets. Amos has a background in information technology sales, having driven multi-million Euro per year accounts for global technology companies. He’s committed to shaping the future of the stock photo industry through innovation and strategic investments.

Prof. Dr. Kai Uwe Barthel studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Berlin. From 1990 to 1996 he was an assistant professor at the Technical University of Berlin. In 1996 he finished his PhD in the field of fractal image compression. After that he led a research project dealing with 3D-video coding. In 1998 Kai Barthel became head of R&D with LuraTech Inc. Berlin. During this time he participated in the development of hard- and software for image compression and in the JPEG2000 standardization committee. The research topic of that time was segmentation of documents for Mixed-Raster-Content compression. In 2001 he became a professor at HTW, University of applied sciences in Berlin. At HTW Berlin he is teaching courses such as image processing, computer vision and information retrieval. Main research topics are content-based image retrieval, visual image sorting and semantic image search. In 2009 Prof. Barthel founded the start-up company pixolution, a company for visual image search (www.pixolution.de).

Panel: The Future Of Picture Distribution

Moderator: Lanny Ziering


Lanny Ziering is CEO of RGB Ventures LLC / Superstock, one of the oldest names in stock photography and known for its unique collection of fine art, vintage, travel, and contemporary imagery. Lanny is also a founding partner of Blend Images LLC, the leading stock photography brand for ethnically diverse lifestyle and business imagery. Prior to helping start Blend, Lanny worked as an assignment and stock photographer. His assignments included editorial, political, and portrait work. His business background includes work as a management consultant and being on the marketing staff of MTV during its start-up phase in the early 1980s. Lanny holds an MBA from UCLA’s Andersen Graduate School of Management.

Tom Tinervin: Tinervin is the Managing Director of picturemaxx International; Tom has over ten years experience in global SaaS (software as a service) solutions as an executive officer and manager in dominant market leading companies: Digital Railroad, Getty Images, and Corbis. Unique to his accomplishments and vision has been the ability to advocate for artists rights and education of digital media best practices especially through his current role as PACA “best practices” committee chair. Prior to his leadership in the media industry, Tom founded OminFineArt, an art publishing company with the exclusive license to reproduce the masterworks of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Alfonso Gutierrez: Gutierrez graduated as a Chemical and Electrical Engineer, worked as a chemist in the pharmaceutical industry and finally worked as a photographer and graphic editor on a Spanish publishing house where he travelled the world until he opened age fotostock 38 years ago. Today he is still at the helm of the company, which employs over 60 people, has offices in Barcelona, Madrid, New York and Paris and it distributes images through more than100 agencies in 60 countries worldwide.

Offir Gutelzon: Gutelzon is the CEO and a co-founder of PicScout. In his previous role as General Manager of PicScout, Offir led the company’s development and execution of the leading image recognition solution Image TrackerTM. Prior to PicScout, Offir worked with several start-up companies and was involved in the vision and creation of various software and hardware solutions. One of the start-ups was Tundo Telecommunications where Offir held various product marketing and project management positions. Offir served in a key technology unit of the Israel Defense Force and is a graduate of the Zell Entrepreneurship Program of IDC Herzliya.Offir spends his free time with his family and scouting for cool websites.
