ITN Source showcases the digitisation of ITN’s archive at Footage Marketplace

At Footage Marketplace, (to be held at BAFTA, Piccadilly, central London on 1st May), ITN Source will be showcasing the completion of a two-year restoration project to digitise the entire ITN archive, making ITN the UK’s first fully digital major TV news archive. The project is a significant move for the archive industry as it demonstrates the continual shift to digital content and delivery, but is also of interest to producers and researchers looking for video content for films, documentaries, corporate productions, live events, music videos and other projects.
Digitising ITN’s archive means that clients can search, preview and download ITN content dating back to 1955 in a matter of minutes, via www.ITNSource.com. ITN Source is already receiving positive feedback from producers, film-makers and corporate clients who can now access its content instantly wherever they are in world, 24/7. ITN Source is seeing clear evidence that it is licensing a disproportionate amount of digitised material versus non-digitised.
While ITN Source embarked on the project with its clients firmly in mind, commercial reasons were not the only drivers for this initiative. Project Digital Archive has been nominated for a major FOCAL award in recognition of ITN’s contribution to national heritage. Having digitised content from legacy formats that would have become obsolete, ITN can be sure that ground-breaking moments such as Nelson Mandela’s first interview following his release and iconic footage such as the fall of Saigon are digitally preserved forever. Some real gems in the archive have also been rediscovered, real such as rare footage of a glamorous and newlywed Marilyn Monroe arriving at a wet London airport with Arthur Miller in 1956 to film ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’.
