It’s here; all digital photography knowledge in one place

dpBestflow is a website and several other media containing all the resources a digital photographer could ever need. The initiative by the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) has gone live on the 11th of November 2009 at PhotoweekDC. The initiative is funded by the Library of Congress through its National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program.

The project is the result of two years of extensive research led by prominent ASMP members Richard Anderson and Peter Krogh, who are photographers, authors and industry experts. The dpBestflow team’s work produced comprehensive resources including the website dpBestflow.org, educational seminars, and the new books, “Digital Photography Best Practices and Workflow Handbook” (Anderson/Russotti, Focal Press 2009) and “The DAM Book” (Krogh, O’Reilly Media, 2009). All of these resources will be available to the entire visual arts community.

The twofold purpose of the project has been to, one: Create guidelines for refined production workflows, archiving methods, and best practices for digital photography based on a variety of capture methods and intended image use. The guidelines were developed on the basis of research, analysis of software products and other tools targeted at professional photographers.

The second objective was to publish the dpBestflow as a website open to the public. The adoption of the dpBestflow guidelines will be promoted to the professional photography community and the public through programming at industry trade shows and a nationwide series of training events at ASMP chapters, trade shows, and educational institutions

According to ASMP Executive Director Eugene Mopsik, “ASMP is pleased to be working on this important project in conjunction with the Library of Congress. We are proud to play an important role in the education of professional photographers on how to preserve and protect their work.”

“Through dpBestflow, we are striving to make best practices in digital photography readily accessible to all professional photographers, no matter what their level or working style,” said Project Director Richard Anderson. Senior Project Manager Peter Krogh added, “dpBestflow helps translate the intricacies of preserving digital images into useful information that can be incorporated into everyday workflow habits.”

There are also 36 video’s on the ASMP Bestflow Vimeo channel. Below is an explanation on how the dpBestflow website operates.
