Jimmy Turner partners with Corbis for Worldcup
We bumped into the guys at London based, integrated music agency Jimmy Turner recently. They told us about an exciting partnership they forged with Cape Town production company Fort Films and stock footage company Corbis Motion. The collaboration is taking shape in anticipation of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Third party media partners can licence from a catalogue of high definition stock footage hosted by Corbis Motion, including exclusive aerial footage of all stadia, as well as game reserves, townships and much more.
To compliment this Jimmy Turner will provide global rights clearance of indigenous music, music supervision, as well as opportunities to commission bespoke musical compositions from Grammy and Ivor Novello award winning roster of composers.
Through the partnership, Jimmy Turner also provides crew to shoot exclusive footage on demand along with state of the art post-production facilities. Combined this offers a fully integrated media solutions for the World Cup 2010. I asked Martin Hasselbring and Ben Walter to give a bit more information about what clients can expect:
First of all, congratulations on this agreement. If I understand things correctly Corbis will represent the production of Fort films around the World Cup and Jimmy Turner will manage the partnership right?
That’s pretty much the set-up. Jimmy Turner brokered the deal to have Fort Films footage represented on the Corbis Motion website. We’ve handled the negotiations, contractual agreements, and ensured all technical criteria were met for the delivery of content. We will be the first point of contact moving forward which will free up Fort Films to continue to do what they do best; shoot exclusive high quality footage.
How did this partnership come together?
Conversations started back in June during the Cannes Lions 2009 when Fort Films met Jimmy Turner wandering down the Croisette. Fort were keen to promote their catalogue to North American & European audiences and approached us to source a media partner and broker the deal. Once we saw Fort’s content, we knew we could find a home for it…enter Corbis. It’s taken some time to get everything delivered but a 6 month turn around isn’t bad. Who says you can’t do business in Cannes!
Is it possible to commission shoots around the worldcup as well? And if so, does this go via Corbis?
It is indeed possible but any commissioned bespoke shoots will go via both Fort Films and Jimmy Turner. Corbis will be exclusively handling the stock side of the business and providing this to their international client base.
What about the music? You mention that you will clear indigenous music. Is this via Fort films as well or is this purely Jimmy Turner?
The music portion of the equation is purely Jimmy Turner’s responsibility. We have some great relationships with copyright holders (publishers and labels) who are interested in pitching their content for World Cup productions, and host a network of Grammy and Ivor Novello award winning composers to provide bespoke composition services.
If someone wanted to license or commission music, what would be the steps to take?
The most important first step is allocate a budget and secondly know what type of music they want. You’d be amazed at how much indecision there is when it comes to selecting music – there really is. Our role is to make the selection and licensing of content as smooth and as enjoyable for the client as possible. The budget will steer the conversations towards bespoke or pre-existing music, and naturally the cost of music will also depend on what type of production they’re shooting, i.e. commercial, corporate production, documentary, etc. We can help find the right sound for their production and make sure they stick to their budgets.

Corbis has a global sales force so clients should contact their local Corbis office.
When will the footage become available?
The film footage should be available for licensing the start of Q2 2010.
